Mindful Walking

Since it’s starting to feel like spring and as someone who values being outdoors, I thought you might appreciate some guidance on embracing the changing weather while taking a walk.

Begin with Intentions. Before stepping outside, set an intention for your walk. Do you wish to clear your head, appreciate nature, or simply enjoy the fresh air? Maybe you will choose to have no intention at all. In this case, focus on being present with whatever the walk offers regardless of destination or duration.

Ground Yourself. Once outside, take a moment to stand still. Feel the connection between your feet and the ground. Imagine roots extending from your body into the earth, grounding you and creating a sense of stability.

Take a Deep Breath. Focus on your breath. Inhale deeply, feeling the warm air fill your lungs, then exhale, releasing any tension. This grounds you and sets the stage for a mindful walk.

Mindful Movement: Be aware of your body's movements. Pay attention to the rhythm of your steps and the gentle sway of your arms. Engage in the cadence, allowing it to become a form of meditation.

Observe, Describe, and Participate: As you walk, engage your senses. Listen to the birds singing, an airplane flying overhead, kids playing in their yard, or notice the absence of sound. Look around. Observe the colors around you, the sunlight as it falls through the trees, and your shadow as you walk. This unseasonable weather carries a unique fragrance. Smell the fresh earth and the promise of soon-to-come growth. Feel the warmth of the sun on your forehead, your feet contacting the pavement, and the cool breeze on your face.

Quiet Reflection: As you walk, allow your mind to wander and appreciate the beauty of the present moment. Suspend judgment of what you may be noticing and let thoughts related to what happens after the walk slip away like clouds floating by. Pay attention to aspects of the walk that are promoting joy, peace, and calm. Express gratitude for these observations.

Maintain Appreciation: As you conclude your walk, carry this calmness and refreshed state with you. Savor the peace and positive energy.

Practicing mindfulness in nature is rejuvenating and grounding. It can be a spiritual experience to step outside and connect to something that is much larger than you. Happy walking!
